I hope that everyone is enjoying the snow day and staying warm. A few thoughts for practicing speech and language skills while snowed in today...
Last week during my classroom speech/language group we talked about things that you can do in the snow - sledding, building a snowman, building a fort, having a snowball fight, making snow angels. It is a perfect day to reinforce those ideas. Have your child come up with something to do in the snow. Ask them to tell you how/what you need to do (e.g., get the sled, put on snow clothes, go to a hill, climb to the top, sled down the hill). Great for sequencing, expanding expression, and reinforcing the winter concepts talked about at school. Also, if your child is working on speech sounds, "snow", "sled", and "stomp" are great words to practice for "s" blends. "Kick" the snow while you say "kick", drink some hot cocoa (and have them say cocoa before taking a sip) - great "k" practice! Many of those words also are great work for practicing final consonants (sled, kick, hot, cold, boot, hat, mitten, glove).
Most importantly, have fun and stay warm!
